This Meanwhile is a small press special. We went along to Publish and be Damned’s self-publishing fair at the ICA yesterday and here are some of the incredible exhibiting publishers that we think are well worth getting to know better.

Meanwhile: Shakespeare & Co. and the passing of George Whitman

At the end of last year George Whitman, the proprietor of Shakespeare & Co. passed away. A literary champion with as much of an international following as his famous bookshop, Whitman ‘offered work, shelter and support to countless writers’. This article, from the art and photography magazine State, touches on Whitman’s history and the legacy he has left behind.

Today’s Meanwhile… has an emphasis on publishing. With the rise of the e-reader, champions are emerging on both sides of the debate. Strong arguments are made for print and digital works, and here at Annexe HQ, we think that there’s a place for both. They both have strengths that the other might lack.
So, to have a look at the current playing field, here’s a few people who are pushing publishing, paper or pixel, forward.

Stuck For Words This Weekend?

Well, be stuck no more! Two great literary events are gracing the coming evenings. First up is Rubix, a spoken word night from one of the Roundhouse’s poetry collectives. Then, from the publisher and live literature powerhouse Penned in the Margins, a night of acts in response to the August Riots.

Socialising is an important part of a healthy life

Apologies! We’ve been rather quiet as of late. This is because we took a brief sojourn up to Edinburgh to relax, recharge and see some fantastic theatre during the Fringe Festival. We’re back now and there’s much to tell. Our typewriters have not stopped clacking since our return so stay tuned for a plethora of literary gifts.

Also, we’ve clambered through the forests of the internet to set up camp over on facebook. It’ll serve mainly as a heads-up to our more social networking based readers, but also there’ll be a few tidbits that we don’t find a place for on here. Go have a look.
